We live in Toronto, Canada. My husband purchased a spa gift certificate from a representative that came into his work before Christmas. He also purchased one on behalf of a friend who also gave one to his wife, also a friend of mine. We attempted to book earlier this week, but the spa did not answer the phone. I called the customer support line only to find out that the spa (apparently still in business) is "no longer honouring this certificate". After doing some basic research, I have since learned that this is their typical story. I called the City of Toronto to verify if the spa existed as a licenced company. The company advertizes hair and skin treatments, which requires that they are licenced. Although I spent 45 minutes on the phone, I discovered that the company "Spa Jewell" had operated out a of different address, but closed and did not renew their licence as of 2004. Also, the address listed on the certificate had a spa under a different name, but hadn't renewed their licence since 2006. My husband was able to contact the salesperson, who advised us that he could switch the card for a new spa. We obviously turned that down and asked to simply receive a refund. He advised us to mail in the card, and then he would mail us a cheque. Again, this is not something we were going to fall for. My husband is now waiting to receive an email back about meeting in person to receive our refund. I won't hold my breath...
