Review 5/12/2011

What a rip-off and a bunch of liars they are! This is taken directly from their website: "We believe you should be reimbursed against your actual veterinary bills, rather than paid a pre-set amount based on a list of conditions. This makes it easier for you to understand how you're being reimbursed, and gives you the opportunity for higher payouts." Lies, all lies! I never got paid more than 40-50% of my vets charges for any claims I submitted and now that I have a big claim, they aren't paying a darn thing.
What they never bother to tell you, and is in the very very very fine print is that there is an exclusion in the plan that states that if an illness or injury occurs in one plan period, any treatment for that illness or injury that is done in the next plan period is NOT covered. My current plan period began Jan 15, 2011 and ends Jan 15, 2012. So this means anything that my dog was treated for before Jan 15th becomes a pre-existing condition and will NOT be covered by these con artists!
Who would ever think of or expect something like this??? My past experience with insurance - all insurance - (and I used to do insurance billing for a living) is that there is ONE effective date, when your plan first becomes effective, and then any illnesses or injuries that occur after the initial effective date, as long as your policy is paid up to date, are covered until the plan is terminated. I have been faithfully making my payments all along for the past 15 years (ever since she was a puppy), which probably come to about $9,000 over that time and now that I finally submitted a legitimate claim, it gets denied. Isn't that what insurance is there for - to help cover expenses in the event of a catastrophic illness or injury? I would have been better sticking all of that money in my mattress all these years... Next time I am considering pet insurance, I think I will do that instead! (Put it in the mattress, a shoebox, whatever... just not pay out my hard earned money for nothing.)
I wish I would have seen this review when it was first posted and saved myself a couple thousand dollars at least: http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/the-hartville-group-pets-health-plan-c37991.html
